2008 Spring and Summer Opportunities for Students Items in gray have expired! MITE: Introduction to Engineering 2008 at UT Austin MITE is a five-day program that presents current high school sophomores and juniors with the opportunity to discover the exciting world of engineering through hands-on experiences and interaction with engineering students, faculty, staff and alumni from the College of Engineering. Students stay in on-campus dorms and attend interactive workshops highlighting each discipline of engineering, tour research facilities and take classes designed to reinforce math and science concepts used in solving engineering problems MITE participants will also attend workshops focusing on resume and admissions essay writing. If you have a strong interest in engineering, science or math, see Mrs. Phillips for an application. Session I: June 8 - 13, 2007 and Session II: June 15 - 20, 2008 Outstanding African-American, Hispanic and Native American students as well as those who have overcome any social or economic hardships, are strongly encouraged to apply. Texas State University Honors Summer Math Camp / San Marcos, TX The 19th Annual Texas State Honors Summer math Camp will be held from June 22 - August 2, 2008. This is an intensive summer program for outstanding high school students who are excited about doing mathematics. The goal of the program is to develop talented youth by providing challenging courses in a unique learning environment. Students explore problems individually and in teams, learning to "think deeply of simple things." -Arnold Ross To be eligible, students should be entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade and submit a complete application packet. All packets must be submitted by April 30, 2008. If you are interested in this program, please see Mrs. Palmeros in the Counselor's Office. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aggie Shadows at Texas A&M University / College Station, TX Aggie Shadows is for juniors and seniors. This conference gives a realistic view of college life by staying on campus and shadowing A&M students. Speakers will discuss the importance of involvement during college and why Texas A&M succeeds in its involvement through the student body. There will also be information on admissions, financial aid, and the importance of a college education. Interested students should see Mrs. Palmeros for an application. Only the first 80 applications for both the fall and spring will be accepted. Encounter with Engineering (EWE), a day-long program introducing engineering to high school females. The event will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 11am - 5pm on the UT campus. EWE introduces girls to the different engineering fields and is a great opportunity for them to find out about engineering, what they can do with an engineering degree and talk to engineering students and professionals. This event is FREE, and lunch is provided! This is hosted by the Society of Women Engineers. - Interested students should see Mrs. Phillips in the counseling office for an application and parent permission form. -Deadlines: Guaranteed acceptance - Friday, January 11, 2008 * Normal deadline - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 * (first-come, first-serve basis) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Washington University in St. Louis - High School Summer Scholars Program *For high school students entering their senior year -Students can earl full college credit; learn firsthand about college in all its dimensions; live with other high school students and enjoy cultural and social opportunities on campus and in St. Louis. Eligibility: Students must: -Be at least 16 years of age and a current high school junior; have an academic average of B+ or better; have a combined SAT score of at least 1800, combined PSAT score of 180, or a composite ACT or PLAN of at least 25; and have at least 213 TOEFL score if you are an international applicant.
