What is our school history?

Dessau Middle School opened its doors in August of 1999. Students from surrounding elementary schools make-up the school’s student population, which averages over 1,000 students. Our mascot is the Diamondback and our school colors are navy, maroon, and white.

What is the school’s demographic profile?

We are a targeted Title I school with over 50% of our student population receiving either free or reduced lunch. Of the over 1,000 students, 12% are Asian, 28% are African American, 43% are Hispanic, and 17% are White.

What is the middle school schedule like?

There are three full teams in 6th grade, three full teams in 7th grade, and three full teams in 8th grade. All teams consist of an ELA teacher, a Math teacher, a Science teacher, and a Social Studies teacher. In 6th grade, science and math classes are 75 minutes long, while ELA and social studies classes are 50 minutes long. In 7th grade, ELA and math classes are 75 minutes long, while science and social studies classes are 50 minutes long. All four core subject areas are 75 minutes long in 8th grade. Each teacher will have two conference periods in an eight period day; one personal conference period and one teaming/collaborative planning conference period. The middle school day runs from 8:10 a.m. - 3:35 p.m.

 

Spring 2008 TAKS Scores

Our campus is rated as Academically Acceptable per the State’s accountability system. Over the course of three years Dessau has exhibited continuous improvement in all academic areas. Our most recent TAKS Scores are: Reading 90%, Writing 89%, Math 81%, Social Studies 98%, and Science 75%.
