National Junior Honor Society

Sponsors:

Shari Jones and Margaret Dominguez

Membership is by invitation only and is an honor, not a right. Academics, leadership, and citizenship will all be considered. Invitations of membership are extended to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Dessau Middle School, who have successfully attained an 85% or better average for three consecutive nine weeks grading periods in standard curriculum classes. The potential NJHS member completes the application packet that includes: a resume, a letter of recommendation, and an essay from the student. A selection committee reviews the packet and approved students are invited to attend the induction ceremony. Students may not have served time in ISS, been suspended from school, or have been truant from school. Once a student is inducted into the National Junior Honor Society they must:

  • Maintain a GPA of 85% or better each quarter.
  • Complete at least two community service projects (either in school or out of school) per semester.
  • Maintain appropriate citizenship and leadership standards recognized by this national organization.
  • Participate in monthly meetings according to the by laws of the DMS NJHS constitution.

If a NJHS member has not met these qualifications, they will be put on probation or dismissed from the organization, according to the constitutional by-laws. Any questions about the National Junior Honor Society should be addressed with Mrs.Jones, sponsor.

Box tops for education

NJHS is collecting box tops. The boxtops are usually valued at 10 cents per coupon. The proceeds are used to help fund other community service projects. All collections should be turned in to Mrs. Jones in room D104 or to Ms. Dominguez in the library.
