Class of 2011 Counselor Newsletter

Summer, 2009

Greetings, Students and Parents of the Class of 2011!

Ms. Jessie and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a great school year!  The two of us were blessed to work with such a talented group of students.  PHS welcomed us with open arms and we are thankful for the gesture.  We also want to thank the parents who have been so helpful this school year. It truly has been a collaboration that we are proud of. José L. Medina, 10th Grade Principal

To ensure that your future is a good one, there are some things you need to take care of during your junior year. Hopefully this newsletter will be useful in getting these things done… and on time!  Please remember that although I am often not available by phone, I am always available via email, and by appointments to answer questions related to your educational needs. I encourage you to email me at Pamela.Jessie@pflugervilleisd.net. I look forward to seeing the Class of 2011 on the first day of school, August 25th!

During your junior you should begin to create a personal file or portfolio that contains copies of your report cards, certificates presented to you, lists of awards and honors you have received, lists of all school, community, and clubs/organizations that you belong to including all offices you hold or have held. Additionally, you should always strive for academic excellence and perfect attendance.

Junior Athletes – Read This! – Students who plan to participate in Division I or Division II intercollegiate athletics during their freshman year in college must complete an NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse application. Students should register at the end of their junior year. Prospective student athletes should access the registration materials by visiting the web site at https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/, from the home page, click on “Prospective Student-Athletes,” which will link the user to the necessary information. Be certain to make a hard copy of the signature page and give it to me so I may send an official copy of your transcript to the Clearinghouse. Another copy of your transcript will automatically be sent to the Clearinghouse at the end of your senior year following graduation.

ACC Registration for Fall Classes - Those students wishing to take classes for the fall term at ACC may begin the telephone or online registration on June 15. Please note that I will be in my school office through June 17. After that I will not be available to sign any ECS forms, so PLAN ACCORDINGLY!!! Remember that no student may take a “dual enrollment” class in the spring semester if that credit is required for high school graduation in June, 2011.

New Student Registration - All students new to Pflugerville High School (including students transferring to PHS from another PISD High School or OC) will need to register by appointment. Due to the high volume of anticipated new registrants, appointments are scheduled for 15 minutes each. Please have the required paperwork completed or plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the registration paperwork. To receive the paperwork in advance and/or schedule an appointment, please contact our secretary, Mrs. LaVerne Scott, at 594-0525.

The PSAT is a practice test designed to help student prepare for the SAT college entrance exam. This year the PSAT is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2009. All eleventh graders will take the PSAT free of charge on our campus during the school day.   Review literature available on preparing for college entrance exams: PSAT/NMSQT www.collegeboard.com , SAT www.collegeboard.com, and the ACT www.act.org.

Number of Credits Determines Grade Classification - Students, remember that you must have earned 11 credits by the first day of school to be classified a junior.  Take care of your business, pass those classes and make up any outstanding hours! Also, make an appointment with me prior to the winter vacation to review your academic achievement record to ensure that you have met  all of the requirements for graduation 2011.
