A Little Bit About Me
Hi! My name is Lisa Del Dotto, and I am the counselor at River Oaks Elementary School. I am delighted to be at River Oaks, and I am eager to help you meet your child’s needs. I have a Master of Arts degree in School Counseling, as well as a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education. I have been a school counselor since 2001. I enjoy being a school counselor and consider it a privilege to be a part of the River Oaks Community. Please contact me if you would like to discuss concerns. You can reach me at 594-5026 or 594-5000.
Where is the counselor's office?
My office is in the heart of the school, room 2! I am located at the corner of the kindergarten hallway and the main hallway. My day is filled with hundreds of "Hi, Miss D!" and "airhugs" as the students pass by my room.
If your kids talk to you about "Shirley" they are referring to my pet guinea pig. She lives in my office, and the kids love to play with her. Shirley is very kid friendly, not to mention soft and cute! And I feel the need to mention one more thing about my room - my Hello Kitty collection! It started in my first year as a counselor when I was attempting to make my room look inviting and has since exploded to a ton of items! Almost everything I have in my office was given to me by a student or a faculty member!
Counseling Services
Classroom Guidance Lessons
I arrange times with teachers to visit classrooms and lead discussions and activities that are designed to help your child be successful in school and life. Example topics include: honesty, goal setting, controlling impulses, solving problems, and social skills. These lessons are taught through stories, pictures, games, group discussions, and role playing.
Small Group Counseling
Kids can be nominated by you or a staff member to be in a small counseling group. These groups meet 6 times over a course of several weeks, and the kids consider it a real treat to be a part of this fun and educational experience. If your child gets nominated for a group, you will receive a permission slip from me. These groups allow me to give attention to kids who may need more support. These groups focus on the specific needs for your child. Example topics may include family issues, anger control, self-esteem, and motivation.
Individual Counseling
I am also available to meet with children individually about a problem on an as needed basis. Keep in touch with your child’s teacher about any major changes that occur in your child’s life. I meet with the student to understand their needs, give support, and offer constructive suggestions.
Consultation
I regularly speak with parents, teachers, administrators, and other staff members to facilitate development of appropriate services for students.
Assessment
I am the Advanced Academics Program Coordinator, the TAKS Coordinator, and the 504 Coordinator.
Community Service
I recruit adults from our community to mentor and tutor students. If you are interested in being a mentor or tutor please let me know!
