Taking a Line for a Walk
Our 2nd and 3rd grade students were inspired by the artist, Paul Klee who painted an artwork titled, “In the Magic Mirror. "As students discussed how Paul Klee used one single line and paint to create an expressive work of art, we practiced making faces with many emotions. It was a challenge to recreate an emotion with one single line. After brainstorming a variety of ways to draw a line with an emotion, students selected their favorite expressive line to draw a portrait. The 2nd grade students used warm and cool watercolor paint while the 3rd grade students blended oil pastel colors. It was fun discovering how artists use lines to send a message of emotion and even more fun creating one! Can you guess the emotions on the portraits?

Media Mania
Our 4th and 5th grade students worked with a variety of materials to create some fabulous works of art. As we discussed how artists work with a variety of media, students learned how the choice of artistic medium can strongly affect the message of the artwork and the viewer’s response. For instance, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial was created with marble stone to express a message of strong leadership. Each student chose three different media to express a drawing which described something about themselves. It was interesting to compare the appearance and affect of different media. The art room was a studio of media mania! Way to go 4th and 5th grade!
