Student Policies

Students in Kindergarten and First Grade are allowed to check out one library book while students in Second Grade through Fifth Grade are allowed to check out two library books. Before book checkout can begin, however, each student must return the PISD Elementary Library Policy that is sent home on his or her first day of school.

Library Scheduling

All grades will be on a flexible schedule. This means that all students will be able to come down any time during the day to exchange books. Flexible scheduling means that there is the wonderful opportunity for the librarian and the teacher to collaborate on lessons! Whether that means research time, a lesson to supplement a particular topic, or a story time to enhance understanding, this is the place! Library lessons will be the result of collaboration between the teacher and the librarian and customized to meet students' educational needs. We won't have regularly scheduled lessons, but rather lessons will be scheduled on an as-needed basis.

Accelerated Reader

Wieland Elementary utilizes the Accelerated Reader program. AR provides teachers with an effective way to monitor students’ reading progress. AR is a fantastic motivational tool for students and teachers. Students read books on their reading level and take computer-based tests over the books that measure their reading comprehension. We have added many new Accelerated Reader tests.

Accelerated Reader is online: http://hosted27.renlearn.com/239854/

  • Students' AR successes will be measured based on individual student goals - not based on an overall point system. Teachers will help students set individual point goals, and students will receive rewards based on meeting 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of their individual goals.
  • Students may take AR quizzes at school, Monday-Friday, from 7:40am - 3:00pm.

Parents may request to have an account set up so that they can check their students' testing and scores at home. Students cannot test from home, but parents can see what their child is testing on and how they are doing. To make this request, click here to email the the librarian, Karen Cunningham.

Bluebonnet Books and 2x2 Reading List

Bluebonnet Booklist

The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program is based on a list created from the Texas Library Association. In order to participate, students in grades 3-5 must have read, or have heard read, 5 books from the list of 20 by the end of January. Students who have completed 5 books are allowed to vote on their favorite book at the end of January. The votes are counted and sent to TBA headquarters and the statewide favorite is announced in February or March.

Texas 2x2 Booklist

Every year the 2 X 2 Reading List Committee selects 20 book titles after receiving suggestions from librarians, teachers, parents, students, and others. These are wonderful books for children from 2 years old to second grade.

Birthday Book Club

The Birthday Book Club is a great opportunity for the families of Wieland Elementary to help build our library collection. In order to participate, all that is needed is to donate any amount from $5.00 to $15.00 to the Wieland Elementary Library during the month of a child’s birthday. The child will then come to the library to pick out a special Birthday Book Club Book from our vast collection. Once they have selected their Birthday Book, a bookplate with the child’s name and birthday is placed inside the book and they are able to check it out to show their friends and family. A photograph of the child with their Birthday Book is taken and posted in the hallway before they are given a special certificate to mark the occasion. The book should be returned to the library in a timely manner so it can continue being circulated for all students to read and enjoy. The best thing about the Birthday Book Club is that all monies donated will be used to purchase additional books for our library!

Volunteering is Pfun!

The Wieland Library needs volunteers! Volunteers can help with the book fair, shelve books, or read stories to classes in the library. All volunteers must complete the Pflugerville ISD Volunteer Background Check before you can start working in the library. Please contact the librarian, Karen Cunningham, for more information. She would love to have your help!
