From Phonemic Awareness to Fluency

Dr. John J.  (Jack) Pikulski is a Professor of Education at the University of Delaware.  He is a recognized leader in the International Reading Association, serving on its Board of Directors, and as its President from 1997 to 1998.  Since 1992, he has served, and continues to serve, on the Reading Committee of the National Assessments of Educational Progress (NAEP).  Dr. Pikulski has published numerous articles in professional journals and has authored several professional textbooks.   Come and learn from an expert how to help our students make the jump from phonemic awareness to being fluent readers.

The Writing Academy

Each teacher is provided training in brain-based, learning style oriented strategies specific for writing. This training introduces voice, and shows teachers how to facilitate their students to embed idea development.  The course also offers strategies to help teachers work with their students to organize their papers and sustain focus.

(Grades 6-12) Teachers will participate in activities emphasizing idea development, depth in writing, creative introduction, memorable conclusions and the expression of voice.  Sample papers and assessment rubrics will be provided through hands-on activities

Vibrant and Valuable Vocabulary Gems

This workshop will explore viable strategies including word sorts, golden lines, creative dramatics, and oral language activities.  Through these vibrant “gems”, students will discover the treasure of claiming true ownership of rich vocabulary.

This is the second day of training on Laying the Foundations, the guide for Pre-AP teachers to use to differentiate for those students needs. Teachers will discover and participate in a variety of activities from the guide.
Navigating the new TEKS and ELPS

1.  Overview:  This sections analyzes and summarizes the changes to the ELA TEKS and ELPS with best practices activities for ELL's

2.  Comprehension Toolkit:  Teachers will discover ways to implement the resources including literary analysis, nonfiction text structures, and vocabulary (academic, word parts, and context)

Advocacy Practicum: Relevance in Interpretation, Values and Policy

Teachers will travel to the UT Library and explore the process of locating fiction and non-fiction works that have high levels of relevance for students in the secondary forensics classroom.  We will develop resources that can be used by students to "find their voice" in the dramatic and political forum.
Inventing your Forum: Communications and Debate in the Classroom
Communications and ELA teachers

Participants will receive activities that turn a classroom into a forum for political speech and public debate. We will share activities that promote communication confidence and intellectual clash for students. Shared topics will include:  Integrating Impromptu & Extemporaneous Speaking Activities, Integrating Public Forum and Congressional Debate, Media Analysis, Interpretation Activities and Potpourri.
