Health and Physical Education
Statement of Policy:
Elementary school students are required to receive 135 minutes per week of moderate or vigorous physical activity in the PISD. Implementation of this policy may vary by campus to include PE and/or structured recess.
Middle school students in grades 6-8 are required to participate in daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes for at least 4 semesters during these grade levels.
The PISD Health and Physical Education program is designed to provide a positive learning experience for everyone. The health education program will focus on healthful living choices related to fitness behaviors, nutrition, drugs, human sexuality, relationships, and coping with grief and death. The physical education program will focus on physical fitness, skill development in various individual and team sports, and most importantly, active participation.
Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for wellness. Wellness addresses the social, physical and mental health aspects of lifelong habits.

Carol Myers of Northwest ES CATCH Classroom MVP, Gary Lane of River Oaks and Janice Swope of Pflugerville ES for being CATCH PE MVPs, Martha Mahtab of Pflugerville ES the CATCH Child Nutrition Services MVP, Kathy Scott of Murchison ES the CATCH Parent Leader MVP, Jasmin Kahn of River Oaks the CATCH Administrator MVP, and Cherrie Taylor of Parmer Lane ES the CATCH Specialized/Support Staff MVP.
Congratulations to Gary Lane of River Oaks Elementary for being named a 2009 CATCH State Champion. He will be recognized at the 2009 TAHPERD Convention in Arlington.

National Health and PE Education Standards
The following elementary PE teachers were elected to hold regional office positions at the TAHPERD Convention in Corpus Christi on Dec. 3-6th. Janice Swope Region 3 Chair, Chris Bleich Region 3 Past Chair, and Suzanne Isenhower Region 3 Chair-Elect.
Congratulations to Pflugerville Elementary School for receiving a $2000 CATCH Award for their efforts to make "The Healthy Choice, the Easy Choice" and also the school received $1000 from the American Diabetes Association for their efforts to fight obesity and prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Congratulations to Janice Swope and Karen Turek for leading these efforts.
Six PISD representatives received CATCH MVP Awards for their work in promoting children's health and were honored at a recent awards ceremony. Congratulations to the following: Barry Miller, Administrator, Parmer Lane Elementary Rhonda VanVoorhis, Child Nutrition, Brookhollow Elementary Shelley Davis, Classroom Teacher, Rowe Lane Elementary Docia Craft, PE, Murchison Elementary, Cindy Padavick, Parent Leader, Northwest Elementary Pat Braithwaite, Specialized/Support Staff, Dessau Elementary |
NWES, DES, AND DPS recognized by CATCH and receive Awards of Excellence Northwest Elementary, Dessau Elementary, and Delco Primary schools were each recognized by CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) on behalf of The University of Texas-Houston and the MIchael and Susan Dell Center for the Advancement of Healthy Living. Each of these schools have been selected to receive a $1500.00 (2008) CATCH Implementation Award of Excellence for their efforts to create health learning environments for children of Travis County. |
