More Information Related to SHAC:
Background
For well over 10 years, school districts in Texas have been required to have “Local School Health Education Advisory Councils.” In PISD, this council has been known as the Wellness Committee. Its main purpose was to recommend and approve curriculum and materials related to human sexuality education and instruction in sexually transmitted diseases. The Wellness Committee consisted of PISD employees, parents, and community members.
A couple of years ago the Texas Legislature amended the Texas Education Code to required districts to establish a “Local School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).” The removal of the word “education” by the legislature broadened the duties of our Wellness Committee to include more comprehensive health issues in addition to instruction. The PISD Wellness Committee officially became the SHAC in 2001-2002. The SHAC is an advisory group and serves as a liaison between the community and the school district. The SHAC only makes recommendations regarding health education curriculum and/or instruction.
Listed below are other health related actions the state has required, the SHAC has reviewed, and the District has implemented, over the past few years:
- implementation of 135 minutes of physical activity per week for elementary students
- development of a local wellness policy establishing local physical activity, health education and nutrition goals related to the prevention of obesity, Type II Diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases
- National School Lunch Program federal regulations related to nutrition guidelines
The Texas Legislature and TEA has given districts a September 1, 2007 deadline to implement a Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP). With this deadline approaching, PISD and other districts across the state are currently addressing:
- Implementation of recently developed local wellness policies
- selection of a Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) for the elementary grades (state mandated training by Sept. 2007)
