Student Success Initiative

The goal of the Student Success Initiative (SSI) enacted by the 76th Legislature in 1999 was to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support needed to be academically successful in reading and math. Based on this law, students in grades 3, 5 and 8 could only advance to the next grade level by passing the appropriate TAKS test(s) or by unanimous decision of his or her Grade Placement Committee (GPC). Each student was given three opportunities to pass the required TAKS test(s).

On June 22, 2009, House Bill 3 was signed by Governor Rick Perry, which resulted in a change to the law enacted in 1999. House Bill 3 eliminated the requirement for Grade 3 students to pass the third grade TAKS reading test prior to being promoted to grade 4. Grade 3 students will only be given one opportunity to pass the TAKS reading test this year, which will be on April 28, 2010.

There have been no changes for students in grades 5 and 8 regarding the TAKS assessment. In order to be promoted, students in these two grades must pass the TAKS reading and math test. If a student does not pass the required TAKS tests, the student can only be promoted by unanimous decision of his or her Grade Placement Committee. Students in grades 5 and 8 will still have three opportunities to pass the required tests, but the first opportunity will be later in the year compared to the 2008-09 testing calendar. Below are the testing dates from the official 2009-10 testing calendar:

  • First Administration for Math Grades 5 and 8 - April 6, 2010
  • First Administration for Reading Grades 5 and 8 - April 7, 2010
  • Second Administration for Math Grades 5 and 8 - May 18, 2010
  • Second Administration for Reading Grades 5 and 8 - May 19, 2010
  • Third Administration for Math Grades 5 and 8 - June 29, 2010
  • Third Administration for Reading Grades 5 and 8 - June 30, 2010

Under House Bill 3, a student who fails the reading or math TAKS in grade 5 or grade 8 and who is promoted to the next grade level MUST complete the required accelerated instruction as a condition of promotion. We anticipate receiving results regarding the second administration on June 8, 2010 from the State. If your child is not successful on the first administration, we highly recommend delaying summer plans until the results for the second administration are released by the State. As soon as we receive second administration results, we will notify parents so summer arrangements can be made regarding accelerated instruction that must occur between the second and third administration.
