Credit by Exam(CBE) is an assessment option for afford students the opportunity for promotion to the next grade level (K-8) and to gain course credit (9-12).

There are two types of Credit by Exam:

1) Acceleration:

Students meeting the 90% standard can be considered for grade level promotion (K-8) or can attain course credits (9-12). In order to qualify for this type of CBE, a student cannot have any prior instruction in the grade level or course for which they are seeking credit.

Provision for this assessment is required by law (Texas Administrative Code §74.24 found here). A school district must provide at least three days between January 1 and June 30 and three days between July 1 and December 31 annually for this assessment (check the calendar link in the menu for dates).

2) Recovery: Students wishing to recover credits (9-12) or be considered for grade level promotion (K-8; generally, only students who were held back a grade qualify for this assessment) can arrange with a participating testing organization to take this test. School districts ARE NOT required to provide these assessments. If a student wishes to take this type of CBE, a parent/gaurdian must make arrangements directly with a participating testing organization offering CBEs.

Credit by Exam for Acceleration Process and Standards:

All students will need to meet the 90% standard for each exam taken in order to be considered for promotion or credit (Kindergarten students not meeting the 90% standard can still be considered for promotion or credit through a campus review process if the score is between 80 and 89 percent).

Process:

Kindergarten

- Parent signs and returns request to campus counselor

- Parent completes the Home Checklist

- Kinder teacher completes a Social Skills Checklist

- Student is given an ITBS A Level 5 test

- Student must meet at least 80% on each section of the ITBS test

in order to advance to the next section of the test

- The assessment ends if a student does not meet the 80%

standard on any section of the ITBS and the student will not

qualify for grade level advancement at that time

- Once a student meets at least 80% on each of the ITBS sections,

the student is given a TPRI reading assessment

- The student must recieve the rank of "Developed" on the TPRI

- Once a student meets the above criteria, then the campus will

review the information and decide if the student should be

   placed in 1st grade

- A student placed in 1st grade is monitored for a 3-week time

period while the 1st grade teacher documents their acclimation

  into the 1st grade class

- After the 3-week monitoring period, a review is conducted and

the student either remains in 1st grade or is placed back in the
