BRIDGE for new PISD teachers

Student Success Initiative

The goal of the Student Success Initiative (SSI) is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support needed to be academically successful in reading and math. The SSI grade advancement requirements were enacted by the 76th Legislature in 1999 and apply to the TAKS:

  • reading test at Grade 3,
  • the reading and mathematics tests at Grade 5, and
  • the reading and mathematics tests at Grade 8.

A student in these grade levels may only advance to the next grade level by passing the appropriate test(s) or by unanimous decision of his or her Grade Placement Committee. In order for the student to be placed at the next grade level, all members of the Grade Placement Committee must agree that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction. In order to meet the SSI goal, PISD has implemented a system to ensure that students “at-risk of not performing at grade level” are identified and assisted through our Accelerated Reading and Math programs starting in Kindergarten.
