Definition of Assistive Technology

Per the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Assistive Technology Services are “any service that directly assists a child with disabilities in the selection, acquistion, or use of an assistive technology device.”

An Assistive Technology device is “any item, piece of equipment, or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilites.”

 

Assistive Technology Campus Team Leaders

Campus AT Team Leaders Role   

Role –

  1. Serve as a resource on campus to assist staff as AT is considered for students
  2. Share AT procedures with your Special Education Staff
  3. Determine AT Team members to conduct AT trials and AT Evaluations
  4. Contact Team Members to schedule AT Evaluations
  5. Gain Knowledge of AT equipment / software
  6. Gain Knowledge of how to collect data for AT Trials
  7. Gain Knowledge of how AT can support General Education Curriculum
  8. Remind Campus staff to return AT equipment / software not in use to the Special Education Office
