Bilingual/ESL Program

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL is intensive English language instruction given by teachers trained in recognizing and working with language differences.  ESL programs provide instruction that develops oral and written comprehension as well as reading and writing in English.  ESL programs teach math, science and social studies using strategies and methodologies appropriate for second language acquisition.

Teachers are appropriately certified by the state of Texas to teach ESL.  State adopted ESL materials are provided to help students learn through proven methods.  The focus is on learning English for effective participation in other classes.

The ESL program uses the academic and cultural experience e of the student as a platform to provide the appropriate instruction in English.

Students in Pre-Kindergarten through high school who speak or hear a language other than English in their home and who have difficulty in English are eligible.  All campuses in PISD offer ESL (English as a Second Language)

Spanish Bilingual Program

The Pflugerville Independent School District provides a Spanish Bilingual Program at Parmer Lane, Copperfield, Caldwell, Highland Park, Delco Primary and Dessau Elementary.

These campuses were chosen because of the high concentration of bilingual students living in these areas. If the students do not live near one of these six schools, the district is responsible for providing transportation.  A school bus will pick up the students near their home and take them to the appropriate schools.

Students in the bilingual program will receive Spanish instruction in all the content areas:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  Academic instruction begins in Spanish and students gradually make the transition into English.  English as a Second Language (ESL) is an integrated part of bilingual education.

Vietnamese Bilingual Program

PISD also provides a Vietnamese Bilingual Program at River Oaks Elementary.   If the students do not live near the school, the district is responsible for providing transportation.  A school bus will pick up the students near their home and take them to River Oaks.

All the students in the Vietnamese Bilingual Program will receive English instruction in all the content areas:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  Teachers do not teach the Vietnamese language, but they use Vietnamese to help students grasp a better understanding of the English language and many other aspects of the educational environment.
