What is a School Social Worker?

  • A licensed, specially trained, caring person
  • A listener
  • A resource person
  • A counselor and a consultant
  • A group leader
  • A person who assists students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators

What are the Qualifications of a School Social Worker?

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or an equivalent graduate degree in a Mental Health profession
  • State Licensure and/or other specialized certification
  • Continuing education through in-service training sessions, workshops, and seminars

What does a School Social Worker Do?

  • Makes referrals to Community Resources
  • Makes Home Visits and calls families who need help
  • Assists Teachers and Counselors in helping children and parents
  • Provides parent education classes
  • Provides prevention crisis intervention services
  • Provides individual counseling and support groups
  • Encourages supportive peer relationships and a positive attitudes
  • Helps student make healthy choices
