    DI Information Letter

    DI Interest Form

Riojas Elementary’s Destination Imagination (DI) teams for the 2018-2019 school year are now forming!  Please see the attached information letter and interest form for details.

There will be a short information session about DI at Riojas on October 11th at 7:15 AM in Room 407 with our GT Specialist, Nicole Spurlin.  Note:  Your child does not have to be in the GT program to participate in DI.  Mrs. Spurlin will also facilitate the formation of teams at this time.  If your child would like to participate in DI this year and is not on a team, please try to attend this meeting.  If you are unable to attend, be sure to turn in the attached interest form by October 10th to your child’s teacher.  You can also email the form to jennifer.spurlin@pfisd.net.  We will do our best to place your child on a team, but we cannot guarantee placement.

Please note, DI teams can only form with parent involvement.  Each team must have a team manager.  Teams must also each supply 2 appraisers that will be required to attend a ½ day training on February 2nd or 9th and be at the tournament all day on February 23rd.  For more information about being a team manager or appraiser, go to https://www.destinationimagination.org/volunteer/.  Priority for team placement will be given to students whose parents volunteer (or other adult in their life).

If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Spurlin at jennifer.spurlin@pfisd.net.

    Riojas & Camryn

Staff and students at Riojas Elementary value and appreciate this community so much. The love and support that our students receive is unmatched. In keeping with that spirit, we are asking for your help. One of our own, Camryn, has been diagnosed with a severe form of Aplastic Anemia. This disease prevents a person’s bone marrow from making blood cells. Camryn can no longer go to school because her immune system is too fragile.

There are several ways that you can help:

    1. Her parents are asking people to join a bone marrow registry called Be the Matchto see if they are a match for Camryn. Anyone who joins the registry will be sent a kit in 3-5 days that will include supplies so they can send a cheek swab back to the organization.

    1. The family has started a Go Fund Mepage to help with medical costs:

    1. There will be a blood driveat Riojas Elementary on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 11:00am -6:00pm. We encourage anyone who is able, to come and donate in Camryn’s name.

    1. There is a Benefit Eventfor Camryn on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10-2 at The Pfield @ 1440 W Pecan Pflugerville, TX 78660 (RAIN OR SHINE). The blood donation group We Are Blood will be on hand for blood donations. Be The Match will be on site to assist with donor registrations. BBQ plates will be sold (compliments of Brotherton’s BBQ and Elgin Sausage) and there will be raffle tickets sold.

    1. People can currently donate blood at We Are Bloodat 2132 Mays Street in Round Rock, 4300 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin and 3100 W. Slaughter Lane in Austin. For more information visit We Are Blood.org.

More information is available on the Facebook page Camryn's Relentless Battle.

If your student needs emotional support during this time, please reach out to our counselor at lori.patterson@pfisd.net or 512-594-4126.

In the spirit of family and community, I truly hope I see you this weekend at Camryn’s Event.

  • September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

Posted by Kyndall Jirasek on 9/14/2018

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

To bring awareness and help support children battling cancer, we are encouraging students and staff to wear gold/yellow on Friday, September 28th.

During the week of September 24-28, Riojas Elementary will be holding a drive to collect items for children battling cancer. If you would like to donate, please send with your child or bring NEW books, NEW DVDs, NEW puzzles (no more than 50-75 pieces).  Please write a note of encouragement on the item you are donating to help brighten a child’s day.

We will deliver the items donated to Dell Children’s Cancer and Blood Center.

Thank you again for supporting our students and our community!

I hope to see you at school sometime soon,

    Christi

News Today (without the Smore flair…)

Due to technical difficulties, I am resorting to plain text news… L

    Important Info

No School on Monday! See you Tuesday!

    Grandparents’ Day – September 7

Join us for Grandparents’ Day Lunch at your child’s regular lunch time. Grandparents can purchase a lunch from the cafeteria or bring their own lunch. It is a great celebration of our extended RES family! A flyer will be coming home with your child on Tuesday.

Car Lane Drop Off and Pick Up

Our Car Lane procedures are slightly different in the morning for drop-off. For safety and because the line of cars moves fairly quickly, we do not allow parents who are parking in the lot to cut around the car line. Please wait in the car line to enter the lot in the morning, regardless of if you are parking or dropping off at the curb.

The car line in the afternoon starts cueing up very early...Remember to make room at the narrow part of our entrance (the gap between the crosswalk and the tow sign) for parents who are parking and the day care vans to enter the parking lot. This is different from the morning, due to the cars not moving.

New Information: Travis County is requesting that as our car line reaches Jake’s Hill, the line should continue to cue on Crispin Hall. Do not stop at the four way stop on Jake’s Hill and consider yourself in line. Turn onto Crispin Hall and continue to get in line on Crispin Hall.

Please place your car lane tags (bright colored name tags) on your visor or in the window. It is very hard to read if you place the card in the dash area.

We are counting on you to model our motto for kindness through our car lane procedures. Kindness and patience in the car line is so appreciated! Remember those cars are your neighbors and your children's friends.

    Open House for 1st-5th Grade – September 11 – 5-6pm (Corrected Time)

Join your RES teachers for our annual Open House! We will have 2 identical sessions to help parents be able to attend more than one grade level's meeting. The first session will start at 5:00pm and the second session will start at 5:30pm.

    From PTO

Spirit Wear is ready for pre-order between now and September 21st.  Order forms will be sent home with your student(s) this week.  However, the PTO has made it much easier for you to order this year.  You can now go to riojaselempto.com/store to place your order.  The PTO's goal is to reduce errors and lost orders/money so I would encourage you to use this website as your first choice.  The site accepts credit, debit, and Paypal.  All items will only be available for pre-order only, no extras will be available.

Also, new this year - there are several options - two tshirt designs, "Yeti-style" travel mugs, and car decals.  Show your Patriot Pride all year long! Click to explore available items www.riojaselempto.com/store.

    Join Scouts Night

Pack 685 and Pack 130 invite you to “Join Scouts Night” at Riojas on Thursday, September 13th at 7pm in the cafeteria. We will provide information about Cub Scouting for boys and girls in grades Kinder-Fifth grade.

I hope to see you at school sometime soon,
