    Rocket Families,

It was a short summer, but I hope it was a rich one for our students and our Rowe Lane Community. The O’Connor Family is a bit closer after 4,300 miles, crossing this beautiful nation from south to north and back again – in our Prius. Our audio book , Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, an account of Lewis and Clark’s journey into the American West, provided entertainment for 23 of those hours on the road and also served to keep the complaints about an “uncomfortable ride” to a minimum. Thanks to my 4th grade daughter, we were able to gain complimentary entry to any National Park, Site, or Monument along the way. If your child will be a 4th Grade student this year, your family has the same privilege all year! Check out the details at this link: https://www.everykidinapark.gov/

Our teachers are back in the building prepping for our Meet the Teacher event this Tuesday and the First Day of School this Thursday. We are eager to have our students back and to kick off another great year at Rowe Lane Elementary! If your child has moved on from RLES and you no longer wish to receive this weekly email, you and you alone have the power to unsubscribe from the list serve, and there is a link to do so at the bottom of the message.

All others, please take a few moments to read over the need-to-knows for this week.

    See you soon!

    Meet the Teacher

We sent out an email message over School Messenger last week, so if you are a returning Rowe Lane Elementary parent who shared an email address with us during enrollment, you should have received the message in blue that follows. Parents of any students who enrolled within the last two weeks likely did not receive the test message, but now that we have your information entered, be on the lookout for an email from your child’s teacher this Monday after 5pm. If you do not receive a communication from us, please email Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net Tuesday morning and we will take care of you.

Here is the email message that was sent:

    Hello Rockets!

If you are receiving this message, it confirms that we have this email address in our Focus information system for one of your students who is enrolled at Rowe Lane Elementary. Your child’s teacher will use this email address to send a welcome message next Monday, August 13, after 5:00pm. If you do not receive that message in your inbox or SPAM filter (it happens) the evening of August 13, please call the front office or email Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net Tuesday morning, August 14, so that we can notify you of your child’s teacher and correct any communication issues before the school year officially begins on Thursday, August 16.

All parents and students are invited to our informal Meet the Teacher gathering beginning at 4:00 pm, Tuesday, August 14, in each teacher’s classroom. This simply is an opportunity to say hello to your child’s teacher, see the classroom, and drop off any school supplies in advance if you like. Our RLES Parent Teacher Organization will serve ice cream in the cafeteria starting at 4:30pm, and any families who are new to RLES are invited to stay for a Rowe Lane 101 orientation with Mr. O’Connor at 5:00pm.

Finally, I invite you to take a few seconds to get connected with Rowe Lane news and messages. This year, I will use Remind periodically to send text messages regarding upcoming events or urgent updates. Typically, I send five or fewer text messages per month through Remind. You may subscribe at this link: https://www.remind.com/join/rlescommun, and you may sign up for periodic email updates from Rowe Lane and other PfISD mailing lists at this link:http://www.pfisd.net/domain/234

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week for the start of our 2018-2019 school year!

First Day Of School! Thursday, August 16

Doors will open at 7:05 a.m. each morning, and students may eat breakfast at that time in the cafeteria. If students arrive and are not eating breakfast with us, they will be supervised in the gym and seated by grade level with their peers until 7:20 a.m. when a grade level teacher will arrive and walk them to class. If you arrive with your child on the first day of school and would like to walk your child to the classroom, we ask that you wait in the foyer with your child until 7:20 a.m. as well. Please know that teachers will not be able to visit with parents at this time as their focus and responsibility is welcoming and attending to the children. You will help your child to have a great morning by expressing enthusiasm and positivity, giving a quick hug-and-release, and walking away with a smile. Often, our kiddos take their cues from their parents in new situations, so if you think you may have a tough time on the first day, start practicing that confident smile in the mirror!  After the first two days of school parents and adult visitors will not be allowed past the cafeteria during morning arrival. This is a change in the interest of student safety and will be consistent across elementary campuses in PfISD, and we will communicate the change to our students as well. We will be talking up “hugs and high-fives” at this point in the hallway, right past the cafeteria doors, to give a quick, happy transition to the start of the school day.

Speaking of, our school day is a few minutes longer this year, with an earlier start time and a later dismissal time. The school day runs from 7:35 a.m. to 2:50pm. Students who are not in the classroom when the bell rings at 7:35 a.m. are marked tardy. While we do our best to minimize any negative feelings for the student, being late to class is hard on our children, and we want to help you ensure your child arrives on time and settled each day. Since learning starts at 7:20 a.m. each day when students are able to enter the classroom, we would love to see every child arrive benefit from some extra practice, extra reading time, or extra time with his or her teacher. As you plan your morning and after-school routines, please be mindful that traffic will be intense for the first several days. Parking also will be limited. If driving, give yourself plenty of time as the parking lot will be full by 7:15-7:20 the first few days. If you have the flexibility, I highly advocate walking, running, cycling, or strolling to school on any given day to avoid the morning and afternoon traffic, but especially the first few weeks of school. Please know that students who are dropped off by car may only do so at the curb in the front of the building, or, in the bus circle only after buses have vacated the lotFor safety, students may not be dropped off in the parking lot.

Dismissal procedures will take longer than typical the first week of school. Please be patient with us as our priority is to keep our students safe. We run a staggered dismissal in order to exit all 800+ students efficiently, and our staff begin the procedure at 2:44pm. If you are walking up to meet your child, we ask that you wait at the flagpole and keep the sidewalks clear so that students and teachers may pass. If you are picking up by car, please have your yellow, rear-view mirror tag with your child’s name clearly displayed (these will be provided to you). If you wish your child to meet up with a sibling before walking or biking home together, please communicate to your children’s teachers and we will arrange for them to wait for one another with a staff member at the south side of the building near the bicycle racks.

    Bus Routes

When you go to this link (Bus Routes), you will be able to enter your address and find the necessary information about your child’s bus route.  The routes are current.  If you live on one of the Rowe Lane Community’s many brand new streets, you may not see your bus stop.  If you experience this problem, please call us at 512.594.6600 and we will work it out together.

    School Supplies

If you ordered school supplies through the PTO at the end of last school year, they have arrived and will be waiting in your child’s classroom. If you would like to bring school supplies for your child on Tuesday during Meet the Teacher, you are welcome to do so. Please know that if you have not yet had an opportunity to pick up collect your child’s school supplies, we will be able to accommodate your child the first few days of school. If you cannot afford school supplies at this time or have a barrier to acquiring them, please contact our School Counselor, Krista.Payne@pfisd.net, 512-594-6626, or let your child’s teacher know and we will take care of it.

    School Breakfast and Lunch

Parents are able to set up accounts for online payment of school meals at the following link: http://www.pfisd.net/Page/504

ALL students enrolled in PreK are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and all PfISD families are encouraged to complete an application for Free or Reduced price meals using this link: http://www.pfisd.net/Domain/92

PFLUGERVILLE POLICE REWARDS KIDS’ COOL MOVES

The Pflugerville Police Department’s Cool Moves program rewards children for being safe over the summer. Starting Monday, June 18 through Friday, August 31, the Police Department will be on the lookout for children showing Cool Moves. Youth caught by the police looking both ways before crossing the street, wearing a helmet while riding a bike and walking their bicycle across crosswalks can be rewarded with a ticket for a free ice cream cone. When spotted doing a Cool Move, children are given a ticket by the police officer. The ticket offers a free ice cream cone from participating partners. This year the program is supported with free ice cream cones from Chick-fil-A, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, McDonald’s, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Baskin-Robbins, Andy’s Frozen Custard and Zaxby’s. Rockets,

A portion of Pflugerville Parkway will be closed for construction effective tomorrow.  Please see the memo below for more details.

The City of Pflugerville will be closing a section of East Pflugerville Parkway between Colorado Sand Drive to Becker Farm Road during the next several months for roadway and safety improvements, weather permitting.  Preview the road closure and travel information within the vicinity of the construction athttps://youtu.be/LgllnDfxq_0 and

Buses will be allowed to travel through the construction zone and it is imperative for City staff, Pflugerville ISD and Pflugerville ISD Bus Operations to coordinate schedules with closures and routes, minimizing the impact to citizens and students.  This closure will affect traffic patterns for bus operations will be necessary to complete work.

Traffic control devices will be installed to ensure vehicular, pedestrian and work crew safety.   Access at the intersections of Colorado Sand Drive and Becker Farm Road will remain open for traffic at each end of the closure.

Thank you for your patience as we improve the City’s roadways.  Again, please refer to the video link above has been provided for details of the route(s) to minimize delay. You can also get project information on the City’s web site at www.pflugervilletx.gov/projects.  This email notification serves as notice of the upcoming construction start anticipated on May 31, 2018.

    Rocket Families,

Whew! Hats off to our teachers who adjusted their schedules and to our students for all their focus and perseverance this past week during STAAR testing. Those students who took the tests worked very hard to show off some of what they learned this year, and our younger students were especially courteous, responsible, and encouraging to their older peers.

We have a far less disrupted schedule this coming week, perhaps with the exception of Tuesday’s Election. Rowe Lane will be a voting location, so if you would like to partake in your civic duty while after picking up or dropping off your child this Tuesday, we can accommodate you.

I will be out of the office this week and less available than usual to reply to email and voicemail. Mrs. Waggoner will be acting principal this week until I return Tuesday, May 29, and we are thrilled to welcome Mrs. McKee back to Rowe Lane as substitute administrator! I wish I could be there to see the smiles on the faces of our upper grade-level Rockets when they see their former principal.

Have a marvelous week and a safe three-day Memorial Day weekend.

    Menchies Spirit Night THIS Thursday

The weather is warm, and Menchies is delicious – come out this Thursday from 5-8pm to congregate with your fellow Rocket Families over some Menchies. You’ll enjoy yourself and support our school. Be sure to mention Rowe Lane when you purchase and a percentage will be donated back to our school.

    Rocket Families,

Thank you, thank you for all the support and appreciation shown toward our teachers this past week. We have some of the best educators in the land, and I am grateful to our parents and PTO for helping to honor them this week and throughout the school year. A special shout out to the Hospitality Committee for breakfast, lunch, and dessert this week, and to our Cakes of Love team for getting elbow-deep in frosting to put smiles on our kids’ faces!

Please remember the third- and fourth-grade students will be taking the STAAR test tomorrow and Tuesday, and our fifth-grade students take their science test Wednesday. Our students are ready, and all they require is a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast, and a confident smile. They have earned the last part from a year of hard work and learning, so please make sure they are wearing it ;)

Otherwise, it is a fairly quiet week at Rowe Lane. Please read on for details of some upcoming events.

    Rocket Families,

We have arrived at the final month of the school year, and reflecting on how much we have accomplished already, I am tremendously grateful to the strong community around Rowe Lane. This past week, we established PTO Officer and Committee Chair positions. It is remarkable what a committed set of parents can do, and I am excited that we will ride the momentum into next year. By the way, there still are plenty of opportunities to jump in and lend a hand alongside some outstanding parent leaders. Check out the links in my signature below to get connected.

This week we take time to recognize and appreciate our teachers. Each year I say it, and each year it becomes more true: Rowe Lane teachers are exceptional. Around here we take to heart the mantra “Rockets Go Above and Beyond,” and our teachers live and breathe those words in so many ways, each and every day, to provide our incredible kids the education they deserve. It is tough work, both challenging and rewarding, and we are blessed to have extraordinarily competent and compassionate adults at every turn and in every role. Thank you for the large and small ways you fuel that effort.

    Feeling privileged,

    School Toolbox Orders

It is time again to take advantage of a service sponsored by our PTO. As a convenience, we have partnered with School Toolbox to make acquiring your school supplies a breeze. Between now and June 15, parents can order school supplies for a child following instructions on the attached flyer. The school supplies are delivered to the school, and will be placed in your child’s classroom in time for Meet the Teacher night with no further effort required on your part. All school supply lists already have been uploaded to school toolbox, so rest assured that all required supplies will be received.

    Rocket Families,

So, so proud of our Rockets. We wrapped up our third and final weekend of competition for Math Pentathlon with our 4th and 5th grade mathletes on Saturday. Shout outs go to our students and the parent and teacher coaches who worked with them all year.

Huge shout outs to our individual, community, and business partners and volunteers of the year: Krista Stilo, Louise Howard, and Sarj and Leslie Patel. Thank you for your generosity with your time and resources to benefit Rowe Lane students in big ways. This year would not have been as wonderful without you and your contributions.

Finally, bravo to our Seussical cast and crew for delivering FOUR, one-hour-and-fifteen-minute blockbuster performances last Thursday and Friday. Their efforts were shared with every Rowe Lane student during the day and to full houses each evening. Shout outs to all our parent volunteers and coordinators, and especially to Ms. Baxter, Ms. Stukey, and Mr. Bennett for taking on a tremendous task and going Above and Beyond expectations. The show was exceptional in every sense!

Hope to see many of you at the PTO meeting this week,

    Higher Education Week

This week, we are celebrating higher education. Students are invited to join teachers and staff in sporting college and university T-shirts and memorabilia to set their sights on the many, many opportunities to further their education after high school. We encourage you to make the experience more relevant by engaging your child in conversation about what dreams or plans they have and how higher education can help them realize their goals.

Art Exhibit at Pf Public Library THIS week

Rowe Lane has an impressive Art Exhibit on display at the Pflugerville Public Library now through May 2.
