    Yard sign order form

There a numerous great things going on at Cele this month. A visitor this morning told me they were amazed at how polite our students are in the hallways. I agree! Thank you for sending us such great kids.

    Football Tonight

Because the fields were all so wet and a huge thunderstorm was expected, last night’s football games were cancelled.

The 7th A and 8th A games have been rescheduled to the astroturf at PHS. I am terribly disappointed that the 7th & 8th B teams are not playing tonight but there simply is not enough astroturf in the district. My disappointment stems from the fact that this group of players works as hard as anybody and it bothers me that they will not be able to play this week---they’ve certainly earned it. I will apologize to the players; I’m sure they are disappointed as well. The same holds true for Colt Cheer who work very hard to be awesome and it is disappointing that they will not be able to perform this week.

If your child plays on the 7th A team, please note that their game is at 5:30 tonight.

Again, both teams play at Pflugerville High School.

    Student Safety

Pflugerville ISD takes student safety very seriously. We regularly practice various lock-down drills, fire drills, etc. Yesterday was a Shelter Drill to prepare for severe weather. Please know that we do this to ensure student safety in the event of any emergency.

This past Friday and Monday were student holidays while our teachers attended Professional Development. We used the time to become better equipped to provide safety for the emotional needs of our students. It was a tremendous learning opportunity for our staff and was indeed time well spent.

Again, we take student safety very seriously.

    The Monster Bash---This Friday

The Monster Bash is a fall festival hosted by our terrific PTO. We will have a haunted house developed by our Fine Arts students and plenty of games.

The event will be indoors so that we do not have to deal with the threat of bad weather.

The whole family is invited to join in. If you choose to drop off your Cele Colt, please be sure to pick them up by 8:30. The PTO and our Staff plan to leave by 8:45.

There is no cost for admission and each event cost 1 ticket. Students can buy 10 tickets for $10.

Students can buy a wristband for unlimited events for $20 tomorrow at lunch. The price goes up to $25 on Friday and $30 at the door. You can also buy them online at the PTO’s site https://squareup.com/store/cele-middle-pto

    Picture Orders

Happy October! It is so amazing to see our students fully engaged in learning! We always want to remember that our goal is to make students a little smarter every day. I’ve observed that we are on the right track. We have terrific kids who work hard in class. Thank you for sending us such awesome kids.

    Pfestival of Bands

The District’s Pfestival of Bands is tonight at the Pfield on Pecan Street. All PfISD middle school and high school bands will perform. Our Colt Band works hard and will be well represented at this annual event. The show starts at 7:00.

No School Friday, Oct. 5 and Monday, Oct. 8

Students will not have school this Friday nor next Monday so that teachers may attend Professional Development. Our PD will focus on meeting the social/emotional needs of our students as well as their academic needs. This will indeed be time well spent.

    Bond Election and TRE

There are several important elections coming up. The deadline to register to vote is October 9th (next Tuesday). Please make sure you are able to express your valued opinion by registering to vote before the deadline.

    Picture Day

Tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 2nd) is Picture Day for all students. Students wishing to purchase pictures will need to complete the form that was given to students last week and bring the payment when the photo is taken. I’ve attached a copy of the form to this email in case the envelope did not make it home.

Dianne Pursch will again be our school photographer and she always does a terrific job. So that we can prepare our yearbook, all students will take pictures, even if they are not purchasing any of the photos.

There will be a make-up day for absent students at some point in about a month.

    Monster Bash! PTO

The Cele PTO is hosting the Monster Bash on Friday, October 12th. This is a terrific family event with games and activities for all ages. The Cele Theatre Arts Department is preparing the Haunted House and it will be better than ever!

Last year we had to make a few sudden changes related to the weather. As a result, we ended up with long lines and too few events. We are planning ahead this time around and we expect things to go much more smoothly. I look forward to seeing you there!

    After School Study Lab

We will begin our after-school Study Lab next week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students will be able to go to the Study Lab after school for assistance with assignments, homework and make-up work. Students will also be able to use a computer during this time if necessary.

Parents will need to pick up their student at 4:45. There will be a bus available but please understand that the ONE tutoring bus will deliver kids to all parts of the Cele Community (about 55 square miles) and usually doesn’t finish until after 6 PM.

    Colt GRIT

Please ask your child to tell you what “Grit” means to them. We want them to know that there will be time when the going gets tough and that we want them to keep working through the difficulties. Cele kids have tremendous GRIT!

    Lost and Found

We are starting to see a number of items showing up in our Lost and Found. When the item has the student’s name, we are able to return the lost item. Please make sure your child’s jackets and water bottles has a name on them somewhere.

Again, we are blessed to work with such an awesome group of kids.

Thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place!

    Sincerely,

    Brian Ernest

Good evening! We are now six weeks into a terrific school year. The students are doing a great job of being both respectful and responsible. They make me very proud and I am thankful to be part of a community with so many awesome kids.

    Colt GRIT

We are working hard to develop our students’ GRIT. We emphasize hard work in preparation so that we can achieve success when it comes time to perform. This goes for fine arts and athletics as well as academics. Cele kids have great GRIT!

PfISD & Cele Cell Phone Policy

The Pflugerville ISD Board Policy restricts the use of cell phones and other electronics during the school day. Students are allowed to carry their phones but they should be out of sight and not in use. Occasionally, a teacher will allow students to use their phones instead of a school iPad/laptop but these are rare situations.

When a student has a cell phone in use during the school day, the teacher is to take the phone and send it to the office for the parent to pick up. After the first occasion, there is a $15 fee to reclaim the phone.

Unfortunately, there are times when a student’s phone is confiscated because they were texting a friend or family member. Please make sure your child understands that they are not to do this during the school day.

An even bigger problem arises when a student loans their phone to another student and the phone is then confiscated. Any assistance you can provide in advance is greatly appreciated. I am thankful that this is not generally a very big problem.

    Lost and Found

We are starting to see a number of items showing up in our Lost and Found. When the item has the student’s name, we are able to return the lost item. Please make sure your child’s jackets and water bottles has a name on them somewhere.

    College And Career Ready

Every Monday is College and Career Ready Day at Cele. We share ideas with our students about college, jr. college, trade or tech school or military service. Most importantly, we want our students to begin making plans for what they want to do after they graduate from high school.

My own post-high school plans changed dramatically shortly before high school graduation. Then, I went to college to prepare for a career in business. Four years after college, I went back to school to become an educator. That is to say, plans may change but we need to begin thinking about what we want to do after high school.

Of course, I’m still working on my plan to play in the NBA or win the Texas Lottery. In the meantime, we all need to have a back-up plan! Every Student A Little Smarter, Every Day

    Homework?

We find that practicing what students have learned in class can be beneficial. However, we also find that assigning homework does not provide the type of academic growth we are seeking. Your child should occasionally have a small amount of homework but it should never be over-whelming.

If you feel that your child is not receiving enough homework, please trust that we are working very hard within the school day and using proven, high-yield strategies to ensure great learning.

If you feel that your child regularly has too much homework, I encourage you to meet with the teacher to determine why this is happening.

    Colts Caught Reading

Every Thursday morning, we enjoy “Colts Caught Reading”. For about half an hour, the entire campus stops what we are doing and we read a book for personal pleasure. Currently, I am reading Out Of The Dust and I cannot wait for Thursday mornings! If your child is not looking forward to this quiet reading time, it is quite likely that they have the wrong book. We have been encouraging every student to talk to their Language Arts teacher or our amazing Librarian to find the right book.

There is a tremendous amount of research which indicates that students who read more tend to learn better. As this has become part of our culture, we will continue to provide this opportunity throughout the school year.

Again, I am so thankful to work with such an awesome group of kids.

Thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place!

    Sincerely,

    Brian Ernest

    OPEN HOUSE

The Cele Middle School Open House is this Thursday evening between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. Parents are invited to visit the campus and meet their child's teachers. We will use a "drop in" format so that parents can move about at their leisure.

There will be a very large crowd and we know that parking is going to be very tight, especially at the beginning. Please keep in mind that this is not a time to have extended conversations with teachers. Instead, please meet them and introduce yourself before moving on to the next teacher. Our teachers are asked to keep the conversations very short so that they can meet as many parents as possible. Thank you in advance.

    MORNING ROUTINES

The building opens at 7:55 am. We encourage all students to take advantage of the free breakfast that is provided in the Colt Cafe. We know that students experience greater academic success when they are fed.

There is a bell at 8:15 for all students not yet in class. Instruction begins at 8:20 each morning.

Parents who drop off in the mornings are urged to make sure their child is ready to go when they pull up in front of the school. The driveway will continue to be busy in the mornings and this simple step will help us make things go a bit more smoothly.

    EMAIL SPAM

It turns out that many of the emails that are sent to me as a reply to the Memo end up in the spam folder.  I don’t really know why.  If you send a reply to this email, there is a good chance that I will never see it.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

As always, thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place!

    What a terrific first day!

    Hello Colts!

Aside from a few bus problems this afternoon, it has been a terrific day!  The students were wonderful;  they’re such good kids!  The staff did a tremendous job today of taking good care of student needs.  Please know that our focus for the year is “Who I teach is far more important that What I teach”.  The Cele Team has rededicated ourselves to focusing our attention on students and their needs!  I am extremely confident that this will lead to another great school year as we strive to be a truly premier campus.

We are a very large school, much different than two years ago.  While we’ve been able to accommodate the growth within the building, our driveway is not our best attribute.  Please know that parent pickup in the afternoons will continue to be challenging.  Of course, the first day of school is significantly different but we expect a lot of cars in the afternoons.  A huge “thank you” to the many, many patient parents who maintain their composure and don’t endanger children by taking a short cut through or around others.  Frustration and haste makes me worry about students’ safety.  Thank you!

I hope you will join us for Cele Open House on August 23rd, one week from tonight.  We will use a drop-in format so you will not have to rush from class to class.  More details soon.  In the meanwhile, please be sure to ask your child what it means to have grit.  Ask them what “Colt Grit” means to them and ask them how they demonstrate their grit.  We have awesome kids and I think their answers will make you proud!

Thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place.

    Sincerely,

    Brian Ernest

The First Day of School is one week from today!

    First Day Procedures

On the first day, we will send every student to their Grade Level Team Meetings.  We will tell them where to go when they walk in the door.  The doors open at 7:55 am.  If you would like to tell your child in advance, that is fine---6th Grade will go to the Colt Café, 7th Grade will go to the Gym (after they eat) and 8th Grade will go to the Stairway to Heaven.  Again, when they walk in the door, we will make certain that they can get to where they need to go throughout the day.  We’ve never lost one yet!  We’ll make it a great day and, as in the past, middle school gets out at 3:35 PM.

    Bus Routes

When you go to this link (Bus Routes), you will be able to enter your address and find the necessary information about your child’s bus route.  The routes are current.  If you live on one of the Cele Community’s many brand new streets, you may not see your bus stop.  If you experience this problem, please call us at 512.594.3000 and we’ll work it out together.

    School Supplies

When I was an elementary principal, parents would drop off the supplies before the 1st day.  That doesn’t work as well for middle school.  Instead, please make sure your child has a pen and/or pencil as well as something to write on for the first day.  We’ll take care of the other supplies soon thereafter.

Cele Middle School does not have lockers.  Really.  We do not expect our kids to carry textbooks around with them.  Therefore, we use text books that remain in the classroom.  Some classes may send a book home to leave there for the school year.  Mostly, we don’t rely too heavily on the textbooks.  Instead, we have been able to hire great teachers who utilize numerous other resources instead.  The bottom line is that your child will not have to carry a lot of books with them.

    Breakfast

While the Number 1 best option is still “family time at the breakfast table”, that is often unrealistic.  Our Café provides a free breakfast for every student.  If breakfast at home doesn’t work for your family, please encourage your child to eat at school.  We find that it is so much more difficult to learn when we are hungry.

    Colt GRIT

One of the important ingredients to Cele’s tremendous success has been our Colt GRIT.  Our kids simply work harder and it pays off in so many ways.  If you are new to Cele, you will hear about Colt GRIT all the time!  Be sure to remind your child, as often as possible, to work hard and be nice.  If they will work hard and be nice, success is so much easier.

We are so very excited and can’t wait to see the kids, one week from today!

Course Verification Pick Up for 7th & 8th Grade is this evening from 4:30 to 7:00 PM

I strongly urge parents to wait until the lines have had a few minutes to die down.  To be very clear, parents will receive a list of classes the student will be enrolled in when school begins.  The actual schedule with room numbers and teacher names is not yet ready to print.  Those will be distributed when the child arrives at school on the first day.  Essentially, it is a list of classes that the student chose last spring.

To make this a little easier, I’ve made a few notes.

    1. 7thGrade Immunizations---The State of Texas requires that 7th graders have an updated immunization record.  Without that, there is very little we are able to do.  I would suggest parents not come this evening if the shot record has not yet been updated.  We’ll gladly make copies this evening if you have the updated record.

    1. There will be a few lines this evening.  We’ll work hard to move the process along as fast as possible.
    2. If you receive this email, you will not need to wait in the Email List Line.
    3. If you would like to complete your Free/Reduced Lunch Application early, you can do so here  Free/Reduced

-They have to be renewed each year.

iii.       If you would like to print the forms and fill them out at home this afternoon, they are listed below.  This will greatly reduce your time this evening.  Students who are new to Pflugerville and registered this summer have already completed these forms and should not wait in this line.

Our staff is leaving as soon after 7:00 as possible to get home and watch the Big Brother Eviction Vote.  If you are not able to make it this evening, please call us over the next few days and we can help you out.

It may be a bit hectic this evening but I expect that it will go well.  Again, we are so excited about the new year!

    Hello Colts!

If you are receiving this email and your child no longer attends Cele Middle School, please scroll down to the bottom where is says “…UNSUBSCRIBE…”     Unfortunately, I am not able to remove email addresses from the list but you can do so when it arrives in your inbox.

Tomorrow marks the official end of summer for the Cele Staff.  There are so many things going on at Cele tomorrow that we’ll all be in need of a restful weekend!  Specifically, tomorrow is Course Verification Pick Up Day.  Students’ parents may pick up a copy of the courses the student will take this fall.  Students are not permitted to pick up without their parents.

    6th Grade

We have 6th Grade Camp and Course Verification Pick Up tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM.

If you intend to send your child to 6th Grade Camp and have not yet registered, fear not!  You can sign up at the door.  There will most likely be a long line so I strongly suggest that you arrive shortly after 8.  If you would like to speed things up, please fill out the attached flyer before you get here.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY FOR 6th GRADE (Does Not Apply to 7th & 8th)

All 6th grade students are required to prove residency.  To do so, you will need to bring either a gas bill, a water bill, or an electric bill  AND a lease agreement or a mortgage statement along with a photo ID (Driver’s License).  If you can make copies before your get here, the process goes MUCH more quickly and we can scoot you through the line.  We will have copiers available but this is where the line tends to occur.

    7th Grade

Course Verification Pick Up for 7th Grade is tomorrow from 4:30 to 7:00.  There generally is not a long line for 7th and 8th grade.

UPDATED IMMUNIZATIONS FOR 7th GRADE (7th Only)

All 7th grade students are required to provide an updated copy of their immunization record.  If you have not yet provided us with an updated record, please bring a copy with you tomorrow afternoon.

    8th Grade

Course Verification Pick Up for 8th Grade is tomorrow from 4:30 to 7:00.  There generally is not a long line for 7th and 8th grade.  Thankfully, 8th grade students do not need to provide any additional documentation.

We look forward to seeing everybody tomorrow!

Good afternoon! I hope your summer is going very well and that you are able to enjoy some quality family time while the kids are out of school. With the first of August, parents often begin thinking about the start of the school year. Ideally, the following information will give you a clearer picture of what to expect when school starts.

    First Day of School

The First Day of School is Thursday, August 16th. There is a time change for PfISD middle schools this year; school will begin at 8:15 am. On the first day, every student will receive a copy of their schedule when they first walk into the building. Our 7th Grade students will be sent to the Gym, 6th Graders to the Café, and 8th Graders to the Stairway to Heaven. We’ll have plenty of staff to help them get to the correct location.

New to Cele students will be well cared for! We will make sure they know where to go, how to get there and everything a new student needs to have a great first day of school. I myself was an Army brat and we moved frequently. I know how it felt to be the “new kid” and we don’t allow that to happen at Cele! Please keep in mind that nearly half of our students will be “new kids” so we will all work hard to get to know each other. No worries! Really!

    New Student Registration

For students who were not enrolled in PfISD schools at the then of the past year need to register at their new campus. Those who attended PfISD schools are already in the system and do not need to enroll. We will be taking registrations from 8:00 to 4:00 pm all next week.

If you have new neighbors, please go over and welcome them to Pflugerville, brag on your child’s middle school and encourage them to register their child if they have not yet done so. Sooner is better! Every Student A Little Smarter, Every Day

    Campus Website

Please visit the campus website for information about everything related to Athletic Physicals, Registration, 6th Grade Camp and School Supply Lists. We’re working to keep the information as current as possible.

Bus routes are not yet available but we’ll get them to you as soon as we can.

    6th Grade Camp

The Cele Colt 6th Grade Camp is right around the corner! Thursday, August 9th. The camp begins at 8:30 am. Those who have not yet signed up are encouraged to arrive at 8:00. The information flyer/registration form can be found on the campus website.

    Open House

Please mark your calendar now. The Cele Open House/Back to School Night is set for Thursday, August 23rd. Open House will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and we will use the “drop-in” format that is much more relaxing and enjoyable. We’ve learned from last year’s mistakes so it should be even more easy this time around. See you there!

    Bus Drivers Wanted

Please note the large sign posted at the end of the Cele driveway. Durham Transportation is hiring bus drivers and are paying $17/hour with a sign-on bonus! If you know somebody who might be interested, please pass along the phone number…

    512-594-0495

Many of the Cele Staff have been at school and at various workshops for the past month in preparation for another terrific school year! We have added quite a few new staff members to keep pace with the tremendous growth in the Cele Community. We have worked hard to recruit many of the very best teachers to join our Cele Team and we expect this year to be our best ever!

Thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place!

    Sincerely,

    Brian Ernest

The end of the school year is upon us. Below are several items you may find important.

    Attachements:

    Edible Book Contest

    Book Fair Schedule

    Girls Athletics Info

    Student Safety

Please know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We routinely practice a variety of drills, monitor our security systems, and communicate with local law enforcement. We work to keep a tight perimeter so that strangers and unwanted guests are not within our halls.

    Busy Time Of Year

Over the last few weeks, Cele has enjoyed numerous events and activities. Our students were very successful in Band and Choir competitions. Our soccer teams played well in the district tournament. Our kids were outstanding in the Deutschen Pfest Parade! We are blessed to have such terrific kids!

    8th Grade Formal

Please see the following note from Ms. Robinson:

    WOW!!!

What can we say? Friday night the 8th grade students had an amazing experience and it is all because of the help of parents, staff, and students. We were able to pull off a beautiful party thanks to our Cele community. We wanted to say thank you to PTO for organizing dinner for over 230 students. A shout out to the Art Department for making decorations that perfected our Hollywood theme. To ALL teachers (from 6th, 7th, and 8th) that helped with set up and break down at the end of the night, and to the parents for their countless donations and hours of service. The night was truly magical, if we do say so ourselves. It could not have been accomplished without our wonderful Cele Community.

    8th Grade Team

    STAAR Wrap Up

Thankfully, the STAAR testing is behind us! We reminded our kids that they have worked hard all year and the STAAR would not be a problem for them. While STAAR testing is a reality, it is NOT our focus. Our students are so much more than a score on a standardized test.

The scores for 8th Grade Math and Reading will come in on June 5th. All others will be here in mid-June, after school is out. We will send information when the scores are available.

    8th Grade Graduation

Our 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony is June 5th at 6 pm. Students are receiving an invitation to take home. Seating will be limited and parents are encouraged to arrive early. I really hate to ask but it will help if we will please consider bringing only immediate family.

The ceremony usually lasts about an hour and many families decide to go out for dinner afterward.

    Cele Library

I’ve attached several flyers from the Library. Please see the note below from Mrs. Dominguez.

    Library Books

All library books are due on Wednesday, May 23. Students should clear their record for lost and damaged books as soon as possible, so they can fully participate in end of year fun activities and field day on June 4.

    Scholastic Book Fair

The book fair will take place in the library May 21-25. Late shopping hours are May 23, from 5:30-6:30pm and our 2nd Annual Edible Contest judging will be at 6:30pm. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here: http://bit.ly/CMSBookFairHelp.

    Maker Camp

Ms. Dominguez will host Maker Camp in the library August 6-8, from 1-4:30pm. Participants will learn coding with SPRK+ robots and Ozobots, do video game design with Bloxels, create stop motion animation and 3D hologram videos, and more. See the attached flyer for details and contact Ms. Dominguez with questions. Open to all current and incoming Cele students.

    6th Grade Immunizations

Parents of 6th Graders are strongly encouraged to update their child’s immunizations. Students entering the 7th Grade are required to complete a number of immunizations. As soon as possible, please send us the updated shot record.

    Memorial Day

Students will not have school Monday as we observe Memorial Day. I hope your family is able to enjoy the long weekend.

    Yearbooks

Students who have not yet ordered a yearbook should pick up the form in our front office and should do so this week. The price will go up again next week.

We will distribute the books after Labor Day and we STRONGLY URGE the students to write their name in the book in several places. We often deal with “missing” yearbooks and usually are not terribly successful in finding them. I expect that we will sell out of books by the end of next week.

    6th Grade Camp

Our “Back to School” activities begin with a 6th Grade Camp the morning of Thursday, August 9th. We will send the flyer shortly.

    End of School

Now that the STAAR week is behind us, we are able to focus our energy back to our primary role, making students a little smarter every day! The kids are working and we will try to help them learn as much as possible in our remaining time.

We will have an early release on the last day of school. All Pflugerville middle schools will release at 12:45 on Wednesday, June 6th. Buses will get students home about 3 hours earlier than usual.

Report cards will be mailed home and you can expect to see them in the mailbox around June 13th.

This school year has been a terrific ride. The kids have grown in so many ways and we are incredibly proud of who they have become. They are good people who work hard and are nice to others. We appreciate that you send us such great kids!

Thank you for all you do to make Cele such a very special place!

    Sincerely,

    Brian Ernest, Principal
