  • Special Thanks to Dr. Killian and the family of Sgt. Byron Norwood

Posted by Heike Cook on 12/7/2017

“The Flag We Love” by Pam Munoz Ryan was donated to the Pflugerville High School Library by Superintendent Dr. Killian in honor of fallen PHS alumni Sgt. Byron Norwood.  Dr. Killian received the book from Norwood’s father. Janet and William Norwood’s son, Sgt. Byron Norwood, USMC of Pflugerville, Texas, was killed Nov. 13, 2004, by sniper fire during an assault on Fallujah. The book is inscribed with “He loved America and its Flag and believed that FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE.” The illustrated book recounts the history and the role of the American Flag.

Byron graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1998 and was active in marching band, jazz band and drama. Upon graduation, Byron joined the Marine Corps. Byron spent time studying Arabic and was deployed to Iraq a second time on June 19, 2004. He was promoted to Sergeant July 1st, and participated in the training of Iraqi Special Forces as well as duty with Weapons Company. Byron believed strongly in the Marine Corps objective to assist in the rehabilitation of Iraq and in protecting the American people. He had a passionate love for his country, his family, his friends and God.

As parents of an American soldier killed in recent fighting, the Norwoods were Laura Bush’s special guests in her VIP box at President Bush’s State of the Union and received a standing ovation.

Thank you again to Dr. Killian and the parents of Sgt. Byron Norwood for honoring our school with "The Flag We Love".
