Dessau Middle School Students See the Future
Students learn about plug-in hybrid bus
Dessau Middle School students were treated to a glimpse into the future on May 16. The University of Texas at Austin Center for Electromechanics and the Gas Technologies Institute demonstrated their plug-in hybrid bus, which uses a hydrogen fuel cell as an alternative energy source. The fuel cell produces water vapor as its exhaust product.
After being given a tour of the bus, students were able to question UT engineer Mike Lewis and technician Bruce Morrison. This bus is an integral part of the UT program evaluating hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels.
“To be able to question the scientists, who are working on such an important challenge for our future, is a unique experience for these students,” said Dessau Middle School teacher Debbie Koehler.
This event was the last in a series of field trips and guest speakers scheduled for students in the school's gifted and talented program during their homeroom activity period. Continued cooperation between DMS and various UT departments is already being planned to enhance next year’s GT programs at DMS.
